In Victoria, stamp duty is payable on the transfer of land and buildings. This is calculated using a sliding scale from a top rate of 5.5 percent for properties worth over $870,000 down to 1.4 percent for properties worth no more than $20,000. Mortgage stamp duty in Victoria was abolished from 1 July 2004.
